Growing Freight

A key focus of KiwiRail has been to grow the rail freight business. It represents 60% of the revenue we generate and holds significant growth potential

We’ve made a huge effort to earn the trust of our customers that rail is a reliable and cost effective way for them to move their goods. We’ve made significant improvements to the track, increased capacity on the Aratere by a third and we’ve purchased new locomotives, wagons and containers so that we can offer faster and more frequent services.

And they’re starting to come back – overall freight revenue has grown by 25% in three years as companies like Fonterra, Mainfreight and Progressive enterprises have opted to use more rail freight.
