Improving the rail corridor

KiwiRail manages over 4,000 kilometres of track in New Zealand, 18,000 hectares of land and approximately 7,000 land leases, licences and grants held by third parties.

It is a considerable task to keep the rail corridor looking its best from removing graffiti, managing vegetation growth and planting low maintenance plants. KiwiRail works in partnership with many organisations to ensure the rail corridor is maintained, kept tidy and remains safe for all users including our neighbours.

Graffiti Rail Partnering Guide

The Rail Partnering Guide has been produced jointly by KiwiRail, Ministry of Justice and the Auckland Regional Graffiti Forum. It provides information on how to make a start on improving the appearance of the rail corridor in the Auckland region.

However, the guide is not just pertinent to Auckland. Any community group or local authority in New Zealand can use it as a tool.

Councils, Trusts, private organisations/businesses and community groups are encouraged to read the guide and work in their various towns and cities across New Zealand to partner with KiwiRail to reduce graffiti vandalism, vegetation issues, dumping and littering and in turn reduce trespass opportunities.

Graffiti and Rubbish

Graffiti, Auckland KiwiRail will take prompt action to remove any offensive graffiti that occurs on its property. Other graffiti is removed on a periodic basis, bearing in mind that much of the graffiti within the rail corridor is on buildings, fences and other structures not owned by KiwiRail. Around New Zealand KiwiRail has entered into formal partnerships with local community agencies and trusts that specialise in litter and graffiti control.

Vegetation or planting

KiwiRail maintains vegetation within the rail corridor to biosecurity standards which enables the control of noxious plants.

Many local councils also take up beautification leases with us and assume responsibility for vegetation maintenance, especially in urban areas.
