KIWIRAIL'S TURN-AROUND PLAN

Government investment in KiwiRail announced in May 2010 marks the beginning of a long term plan to transform the rail industry. The investment decision is based on a 10-year KiwiRail "turn-around" plan to set the business on its feet financially. It reflects the need to create a viable and efficient rail business capable of meeting our share of the projected 75 percent growth in freight traffic over the next 25 years. The plan aims to increase rail traffic volumes and revenue, increase productivity, modernise assets and separate out the commercial elements of the business from the non-commercial. The most important single element is investing in the rail backbone from Auckland to Christchurch to make our business relevant again for our customers.
