About Engineering

KiwiRail's Engineering Team has been restructured from what was the KiwiRail Mechanical business unit.  It now sits within the Infrastructure and Engineering team led by Rick van Barneveld.

KiwiRail's Engineering team provides mechanical services to the freight and passenger businesses, and to Auckland Transport through the KiwiRail Freight business. 

The major workshops are located at Woburn in Lower Hutt (known as the Hutt Workshops) and at Hillside in Dunedin (known as Hillside).  These two workshops are responsible for the major build and refurbishment of our rollingstock including the recently refurbished DX locomotives and the newly built AK passenger carriages for Tranz Scenic's Coastal Pacific train.

The Engineering team also has servicing depots in Auckland, Mt Maunganui, Palmerston North, Wellington and Christchurch.
