Rail Disruption Update: Flooding South Island
18 June 2013 3:03PM
Flooding incidents have closed the Main South Line (which runs between Christchurch and Dunedin) and the line between Dunedin and Balclutha.
KiwiRail staff and contractors have been working to clear slips and remove debris from around bridge piers at multiple sites.
Rocks covered the track yesterday just south of Oamaru, with further falls expected from an unstable rock face above the track. Work is underway to stabilise the rock.
Opihi Bridge, south of Temuka, has one pier that has been undermined by the flood waters, sunk and twisted down stream. Arrangements are being made to repair this pier as soon as possible.
South of Dunedin, the track is still covered with water for several kilometres between Mosgiel and Henley due to flooding from the Taieri River.
KiwiRail is monitoring the situation and keeping in close contact with customers so they are kept up to date. Resumption of services will be advised.
