KiwiRail is advising Tranz Metro passengers that, following this afternoon’s magnitude 6.2 earthquake, all Wellington commuter lines are closed while track inspections are undertaken to check for any damage to the rail. The Wellington Railway Station is also closed.
Tranz Metro train services will be suspended until further notice and Tranz Metro passengers are advised to make alternative travel arrangements for this evening.
“Following the closure of the Wellington Railway Station, Tranz Metro staff are not able to source buses for this evening’s peak,” says KiwiRail’s General Manager, Passenger, Deborah Hume.
Tranz Metro will be updating its website regularly and is urging customers to check the information before they travel at www.tranzmetro.co.nz.
“We hope to have services back up and running as quickly as possible, and when we do we will notify our customers on the website and via our text messaging system," Ms Hume says.
Ferry services are operating.
Freight services between Christchurch and Palmerston North are also currently suspended while checks to the rail lines are carried out.
