Landing Creek Road Level Crossing Incident

21 May 2014 2:02PM

KiwiRail can confirm that a coal train, with 26 wagons, has been involved in a collision at 12.52pm this afternoon with a vehicle at the Landing Creek Road level crossing near Reefton. The train was heading towards Westport.

The level crossing is protected by Give Way signs and no previous collisions have been recorded at this crossing. It is a crossing with low road traffic volumes.

KiwiRail’s thoughts and sympathy are with the families of those involved.

Such incidents are also distressing for our staff, in particular our drivers, and as a matter of course drivers are relieved of their duties for three days and offered counselling.

Emergency services are on the scene and the incident is being investigated by Police.

Ends.
