Silverstream Bridge Strike Update
08 January 2015 11:11AM
Update 11.50 am
Tranz Metro services between Taita and Upper Hutt stations are still being replaced by buses after a truck struck the Silverstream rail bridge yesterday.
The bridge has severe structural damage caused by the impact of the vehicle and KiwiRail engineers worked overnight to develop a plan to strengthen the damaged span. In the interim, a temporary repair is being undertaken to enable safe rail operations to resume as soon as possible. We are also working to source a replacement span to provide a permanent solution.
Customers are advised that normal Tranz Metro services will not resume until Friday afternoon at the earliest (9 January).
A special timetable will continue to run with half hourly services and bus replacements between Upper Hutt and Taita. Customers should check the Tranz Metro website for service updates – www.tranzmetro.co.nz.
Wairarapa services will continue to run, as one rail line on the bridge is still able to be utilised.
Passengers on these services should still plan for delays due to speed restrictions that will be in place, while the repair work is being undertaken on the Hutt Line.
Further updates will be provided as more information is available.
