Rail grinder

Improving your local rail network

Over summer, we’ll be carrying out important work to maintain and improve the performance of Auckland’s rail network.

A rail grinder will be deployed on the Auckland network to smooth out the rail. The rail grinder corrects the shape and extends the lifespan of the rail track, helping to deliver a more reliable train journey.

The network is increasingly busy with 198,000 commuter services each year and 246 freight trains per week.

We need to do this work at night when where there is no commuter train services running.

If I live near the rail corridor, what does this mean:

  • The rail grinder machine will move along the track and will create noise, however it will not remain in one area for more than a few hours.
  • We expect the grinder to operate in your area for approximately two nights in the next few weeks.
  • The grinder creates sparks which may look exciting at night but we recommend our neighbours stay inside and do not try to get a closer look.

We apologise for any inconvenience. Our staff and contractors are mindful of our rail neighbours and will work hard to keep the noise and disruption to a minimum.

Where will the grinder be working?
