Rail grinder

Improving your local rail network

From time to time, a rail grinder is deployed on our network to smooth out the rail. The rail grinder corrects the shape and extends the lifespan of the rail track, helping to deliver a more reliable train journey.

For the Auckland and Wellington metro areas, we need to do this work at night when where there are no commuter train services running.

If you live near the rail corridor, it may cause disruption:

  • The rail grinder machine will move along the track and will create noise, however it will not remain in one area for more than a few hours.
  • The grinder creates sparks which may look exciting at night but we recommend our neighbours stay inside and do not try to get a closer look.

We apologise for any inconvenience. Our staff and contractors are mindful of our rail neighbours and will work hard to keep the noise and disruption to a minimum.

Current status:
