KiwiRail's Xmas Holiday works

While most New Zealanders took a break, hundreds of KiwiRail staff and contractors were hard at work on the rail network in Auckland and Wellington.

Each year KiwiRail takes advantage of the holiday lull, when passenger demand is down, to shut down these busy parts of the rail network and carry out a major work blitz to ensure good service for the rail commuters in these two cities.

The work was completed on both metro networks between Boxing Day and January 5 2020.

Wellington

In Wellington KiwiRail worked on 13 sites overall, spread from the Wairarapa to the Hutt Valley and Porirua.

The work included installing the foundations for 80 new masts over the overhead powerlines in the busiest part of the network – the approaches to Wellington Railway Station.  Elsewhere around the network, the activity included building underpasses, upgrading level crossings and installing barrier arms, replacing rail and sleepers, and improving slope stability and drainage.

The NZ Transport Agency also worked during this shutdown, installing a new walking and cycling underpass on the Melling Line as part of the Petone to Melling section of Te Ara Tupua.

Auckland

In Auckland KiwiRail is also working across the network between December 26 and January 5.

This includes at four level crossings along the Western Line and one on the Southern Line.

The Western line will be closed to allow for works to replace sleepers, track and turnouts - which allow trains to change tracks -  at several locations, and for CRL interim works, and early works for the New Lynn to Avondale cycleway.

The Southern Line and Eastern Lines will be closed south of Westfield for Otahuhu third platform work and Puhinui Interchange, track work and sleeper replacement between Papakura and Pukekohe.
