Interislander ferry Aratere has encountered what is believed to be an electrical fault on her arrival into Wellington this afternoon.  The vessel was still fully operational, and berthed safely, and passengers disembarked.  However, her scheduled 1445 departure was cancelled to allow time to identify and repair the fault.

Interislander engineers spent the night working and testing on board Arahura.  Full test have been carried out of the bridge and engine room controls, as well as the safety, alarm and override systems.  The engineers are confident the fault has been identified and successfully repaired, and successful sea trials were carried out.

KiwiRail has begun assessing what is required to refurbish the rail track and tunnel floor of the Kaimai Tunnel - its first major reconstruction since opening 36 years ago.   Once that assessment is complete work will take place over the coming five to ten years to upgrade the 8.9km long tunnel to future proof the busy transport linking the Bay of Plenty to the Waikato, Auckland and beyond.

Testing of 33 of the 40 DL Locomotives has been completed and sent for analysis to an accredited laboratory. The full results are expected by the end of this week. The locomotives were grounded last Friday, after confirmation was received that a sound proofing compound used in them contained asbestos.
