Rail Disruption Update: Flooding South Island

19 June 2013 10:10AM

KiwiRail staff and contractors have been working steadily to clear slips and remove debris from around bridge piers at multiple sites on the Main South Line (between Christchurch and Dunedin).

Flooding incidents have closed the MSL north of Timaru and the line between Dunedin and Balclutha.  The MSL between Timaru and Dunedin is now open.

Opihi Bridge, south of Temuka, has one pier that has been undermined by the flood waters and twisted downstream.  Arrangements are being made to repair this pier as soon as possible.

South of Dunedin, the track is still covered with water for several kilometres between Mosgiel and Henley due to flooding from the Taieri River.

KiwiRail is monitoring the situation and keeping in close contact with customers so they are kept up to date.
