The upgrade of Newmarket station and junction was completed in January 2010 with the opening of the new station and commissioning of the new track layout. The replacement of the Remuera Rd rail overbridge was completed at the end of November 2009.
Newmarket is the second busiest station on the network after Britomart and is at a key junction on the network.
Rebuilding the station, junction and surrounding track was a critical part of Project DART. The old track layout created a bottleneck, so a major redevelopment of the track was carried out to ensure trains keep running smoothly through this busy part of the network.
It provided a wide range of service options ‐ including a direct connection between Britomart and the west, and possible west to south direct services.
