While Aucklanders enjoy the summer holidays and patronage on the network is traditionally light, the Auckland rail network will temporarily close so a large programme of work can go ahead safely and efficiently.
The Christmas shutdown allows our teams to get a huge amount of work done over a short period of time across a range of projects that will allow faster, more frequent and more reliable train services for Auckland.
Our projects would take years longer to complete without the ability to make big strides during intermittent shutdowns so we thank Aucklanders for their understanding during this time.
The network will be closed to passenger trains from December 26 (Boxing Day) until January 16. Britomart Station, and the Western Line from Newmarket to Swanson will remain closed to passenger trains until January 23.
KiwiRail will focus its holiday works on:
• Bringing electrification to the line between Papakura and Pukekohe
• Construction on the third main line through the busiest part of the network between Westfield and Wiri
• Carrying out necessary track repairs across the metro area.
We plan works in a way that minimises overall disruption and give our rail corridor neighbours notice of the changes that are likely to affect them.
However to make the most of this time our teams will be working day and night throughout this period at some sites.
We know that some inconvenience and noise is inevitable, and apologise in advance for that.
