Maintaining our fleet

We maintain our rolling stock assets to ensure our operational fleet performs for rail freight customers.

With a team of around 580 people, our maintenance team manages the whole-of-life rolling stock, including fleet planning, engineering, procurement, commissioning, maintenance and asset retirement.

We own, operate, and maintain substantial numbers of rolling stock. Our assets include:

  • 172 mainline locomotives
  • Around 4700 freight wagons
  • Around 60 passenger carriages
  • 80 shunt locomotives.

We have maintenance and servicing facilities located throughout New Zealand, with our major overhaul workshop in Woburn, Lower Hutt.

We are undertaking a major procurement project to modernise our fleet including new mainline locomotives, shunt locomotives and wagons.  We are also upgrading 12 mechanical depots around the country (including a new Waltham facility) supporting the safe work of our maintenance crews and improving the efficiency of our operations.

The Government has also invested $105 million to rebuild Hillside Workshops in Dunedin and establish a wagon assembly facility.
