Damage to KiwiRail Property

Third party damage to KiwiRail property

Unfortunately, from time to time, members of the public damage KiwiRail assets and infrastructure or cause an interruption to our operations. This damage can be intentional (e.g. vandalism to a building) or unintentional (e.g. a vehicle collides with a level crossing barrier).

KiwiRail’s Incident Team follow up these situations and may seek to recover costs for certain events including:

  • Vehicle collision with level crossing protection system (e.g. barrier arms or signal equipment)
  • Vehicle collision with rail bridge
  • Livestock in the rail corridor
  • Obstruction in the rail corridor (e.g. abandoned items, vegetation)
  • Illegal discharges (e.g. water directed onto the rail corridor)
  • Unauthorised activities on rail corridor land (e.g. earthworks, storing materials)
  • Construction activity encroaches on KiwiRail land or damages KiwiRail property
