Rail safety

Safety is our top priority – for our customers, our neighbours, the general public and our KiwiRail team and contractors.

That’s why we:

Rail Safety Week (August)

Every August we lead a national Rail Safety Week with TrackSAFE New Zealand to raise awareness about how to stay safe around railway tracks and trains. This initiative is supported by the New Zealand Transport Agency, Auckland Transport and Greater Wellington Regional Council, the New Zealand Police, Auckland One Rail and Transdev Wellington (who operate the Auckland and Wellington commuter services respectively) and local councils around New Zealand.

Spreading the message in schools

The New Zealand Transport Agency has developed some rail safety resources based on the New Zealand education curriculum. We encourage schools to download them here.

In most locations around the country we can arrange for a member of our KiwiRail team to speak to your students about keeping safe around rail. Please contact us on 0800 801 070 or let us know on our online form if you would like to know more.

You can find out more about our Zero Harm vision here.

Track Talk

KiwiRail Locomotive Engineers are interviewed by Auckland schoolchildren in this video created by KiwiRail to help teach kids about rail safety. The video is shown by KiwiRail ambassadors in schools around the country.
