Carterton trenching going well

KiwiRail is working on sections of track through the Carterton area right now, getting it in shape for when Greater Wellington Regional Council’s new hybrid electric trains arrive from 2029.

The work involves upgrading level crossings, installing cabling to run a new signalling system and power up the safety barriers, lights and signals at the level crossings.

These past few weeks we've been laying ducting alongside the railway line and under the Chester Road and Andersons Line level crossings. With these nearly done, the crew moves to Wiltons Road at the beginning of July, and during the month will be working at the Lincoln and Dalefield Road level crossings. We expect to have this lot of work wound up by the end of August. Traffic will be reduced to single lane at times while we are carrying out the work, and there will be occasional nights when the road is fully closed with detours in place.
