Interislander is encouraging Kiwis to rethink how they travel this winter, with new foot passenger fares from $50, making it easier than ever to cross the Cook Strait without a car.
Available on selected sailings between Wellington / Whanganui-a-Tara and Picton / Waitohi, the limited-time winter offer is designed to help travellers continue to access Cook Strait journeys at a time when broader transport costs are rising.
General Manager of Passenger, KiwiRail, Clare Morgan, says the campaign reflects the current cost pressures and a shift toward more flexible, value-driven travel.
“Like other transport providers, we are seeing increased fuel and operating costs, which are reflected across our fares. Our winter campaign ensures there is still an accessible way for people to get across Cook Strait and travelling as a foot passenger is the most affordable option.”
With fares from $50 for adults and $25 for children and no car required, travellers can walk on, settle in and enjoy the journey, avoiding those additional fuel costs, queues and the added expense of travelling with a vehicle.
"For a lot of trips, you don’t need to take the car. You can walk on in Wellington or Picton, relax on board, and connect easily to transport options at the other end. It’s a simpler way to travel, and for many people, a much more cost-effective one.”
The campaign also taps into a great winter events calendar across both regions, giving Kiwis more reasons to explore.
WellingtonNZ’s CE Mark Oldershaw says the capital is an ideal winter destination.
“Winter is a fantastic time to visit Wellington, with a packed events calendar bringing the city to life, from the 12-day Lōemis Festival in June, through to the All Blacks vs Italy match and Royal New Zealand Ballet’s winter season in July, Visa Wellington On a Plate and Beervana in August, and the Star Wars: LEGO exhibition at Tākina throughout the season.
“Beyond the events, Wellington offers even more for visitors, with a vibrant hospitality scene, worldclass dining, and unique experiences. We’ve also just welcomed Te Ara Tupua, an accessible 4.5 kilometre walking and cycling link between Wellington and the Hutt Valley, and a great activity for visitors.”
Similarly, Destination Marlborough’s GM Tracey Green says the campaign highlights the appeal of the region during the quieter season.
“Winter is a very special time to visit Marlborough, with incredible food and wine experiences that are perfect for a seasonal escape. Visitors can spend their days exploring cellar doors, enjoying fireside dining, or getting out into the Marlborough Sounds for a truly unique winter experience.”
“There’s also a growing calendar of winter events, including the Marlborough Book Festival in July, which brings together writers and readers from across the country. Combined with the ease of travelling as a foot passenger, it makes it much simpler for visitors to plan a relaxing and affordable winter getaway.”
Foot passenger fares start from $50 for adults and $25 for children, available for a limited time on selected winter sailings between 25 May and 31 August 2026. Fares are for foot passengers only, subject to availability, and apply to selected sailings. Standard booking conditions apply.
