Kaikoura 1200x390

KiwiRail plays a critical role in sustainably growing the prosperity of New Zealand and in boosting regional economies.

We carry around 16% of all freight and 25% of all exports, connecting Kiwi businesses around the country and to the world.

Rail contributes $1.5 billion in often unseen benefits to the New Zealand economy each year through reducing congestion in cities, improving road safety and reducing carbon emissions. You can read more about the Value of Rail to New Zealand here.

KiwiRail is also one of the country’s largest tourism operators through our Great Journeys of New Zealand services which provide connected journeys and tourism experiences in regional towns and our major cities.

Coastal Pacific returns

Prime Minister Jacinda Arden speaks with Kaikoura locals on a special service celebrating the return of the Coastal Pacific in November 2018. The service carries thousands of people to Kaikoura each year, bringing millions in tourism spend and supporting hundreds of local jobs.

Regional benefits

KiwiRail’s tourism services are well-placed to help drive New Zealand’s regional growth aspirations in a sustainable way, delivering tourists into the regions while decreasing the impact of visitors on the environment.

Rail offers enormous benefits to regions through increasing productivity and creating jobs through delivering goods to people and ports, taking freight off regional roads and bringing high-spending tourists to regions.

The Govenrment’s Provincial Growth Fund has contributed to a number of new initiatives in regional New Zealand including the reopening of the Napier to Wairoa line, increasing tourism capacity, introducing a new premium class on some of our Great Journeys services and helping us build a growing network of modern freight and forestry hubs to help local businesses grow.
