Over‑Dimension and Over‑Weight Loads
Over‑dimension and over‑weight loads are larger or heavier than standard road vehicles. These loads can cross a railway line, but you must obtain a Rail Crossing Permit before doing so.
Railway crossings are designed for normal-sized vehicles with clear lines of sight and appropriate warning systems. Larger, heavier, or slower‑moving loads require additional safety measures to ensure safe passage across the level crossing.
Some crossings may require KiwiRail staff to temporarily adjust equipment such as barrier arms, bells, overhead wires, or traction equipment. The specific requirements will depend on the location, type of crossing, and the dimensions of your vehicle and load.
The permit system ensures that every crossing is assessed appropriately so KiwiRail can maintain a safe rail network.
