KiwiRail’s purpose, to deliver stronger connections for a better New Zealand, drives our teams every day to improve services for our customers through our maintenance and improvement work.
We plan our work in a way that minimises overall disruption. In Auckland and Wellington, we work with the metro operators to plan for maintenance and improvement works, up to 12 months in advance.
We look after New Zealand’s rail network, including operating and maintaining 3700 kilometres of track and 6 million sleepers.
Looking after rail track to keep trains running smoothly and safely is an important part of what we do. We use a range of specialist machines and technology, generally at times when no passenger trains are running.
After two years of work, the new second track between Trentham and Upper Hutt stations is complete and opened to trains on 15 November 2021.
