Who we are
Who we are
KiwiRail operates an integrated services and infrastructure business as a state-owned enterprise.
We operate Interislander, Great Journeys New Zealand, rail freight and property services. We also operate Te Huia and Capital Connection under contract to their council owners.
We own and maintain the national rail network infrastructure. In Auckland and Wellington, we manage the metro networks supporting 24 million commuter trips each year.
We transport around 16 million tonnes of freight, including around 24% of New Zealand’s export goods, and connect more than 300 customers’ freight supply chains. Our rail network and services reduce heavy vehicle impact by more than 1 million truck journeys each year.
Together, our services and infrastructure deliver significant benefits to New Zealand’s economy, worth $3.3 billion every year.
Where we are
KiwiRail is one of New Zealand's largest employers, with 4,500 people working in more than 50 towns and cities across the country. Many of our employees are part of multi-generational rail families, bringing deep expertise and pride to the work we do every day.
Getting everyone home safe
A key part of our vision is to become the leading health and safety organisation in New Zealand. That means a belief by all our people that every incident is preventable.
We want all of our people and the public to go home safe to their families every day.
We encourage a proactive approach to safety through:
- frontline Health and Safety Action Teams throughout the country that highlight issues and help find solutions
- safety skills training with a focus on non-technical skills
- ‘Safety, Health and Environment’ work conversations with our people.
Supporting our people
We're committed to helping our people succeed. Our graduate, mentoring and Toi Toi Leadership programmes support the development of future leaders across KiwiRail.
We champion diversity and promote Te Ao Māori throughout our organisation. Te Kupenga Mahi, KiwiRail's Māori network, helps strengthen understanding, connection and cultural capability across our workforce.
