Level crossings
Level crossings in New Zealand
New Zealand has more than 3,000 road level crossings, where roads and rail lines intersect. KiwiRail maintains almost half of the country’s public level crossings.
Public level crossings are protected using one of three safety systems:
- Half-arm barriers with flashing lights and warning bells
- Flashing lights and warning bells
- Stop or Give Way signs
The remaining level crossings are private crossings located on privately owned land.
There are also around 140 dedicated public pedestrian level crossings across New Zealand. These crossings are protected by automatic gates or barriers, flashing warning signs, or flashing lights and bells to help people cross railway tracks safely.
