Fleet
Maintaining our fleet
We maintain our rolling stock assets to ensure our operational fleet performs for our rail freight customers.
With a team of around 590 people, our rolling stock team manages the whole-of-life care of these assets, including fleet planning, engineering and asset management, procurement, commissioning, maintenance and asset retirement.
We own, operate, and maintain substantial numbers of rolling stock.
Our assets include:
- 165 mainline locomotives
- Around 4400 freight wagons
- Around 60 passenger carriages
- 80 shunt locomotives including both diesel and electric shunt locomotives
We have maintenance and servicing facilities throughout New Zealand with major sites in Auckland, Palmerston North and Christchurch. We also have a major overhaul workshop in Woburn, Lower Hutt.
Modernising our fleet
We are undertaking a major procurement project to modernise our fleet including new mainline locomotives, shunt locomotives and wagons.
We have upgraded our mechanical depots around the country, including a new facility at Waltham in Christchurch to support safe working by our maintenance crews and improve the efficiency of our operations.
The Government also invested significantly to rebuild Hillside Workshops in Dunedin and establish a wagon assembly facility. More than 1000 wagons have been assembled since the rebuild was completed.
