Waltham Mechanical Hub
Waltham rail maintenance facility
KiwiRail’s Waltham yard in Christchurch is a key rail maintenance facility for the South Island, supporting the locomotives, passenger carriages and wagons that keep our rail services moving. The purpose-built mechanical facility brings maintenance teams and specialist equipment together at one site, helping us maintain our fleet efficiently and support reliable South Island rail operations. Funding for the project came from the Government’s Crown Infrastructure Partners Shovel-Ready Fund and Budgets.
Maintaining our South Island rail fleet
The 9,400-square-metre mechanical maintenance building includes 25 maintenance berths and specialist equipment for maintaining locomotives, carriages and wagons.
Facilities include an underfloor wheel lathe, wheelset drop table and locomotive axle weighing systems. The surrounding rail yard provides access to the maintenance bays and includes around five kilometres of track.
Sustainably designed
Sustainability was an important part of the Waltham redevelopment.
The maintenance building has 774 solar panels on its north-facing roof, with capacity to generate approximately 356 kW of electricity and provide much of the building’s electricity needs.
Construction materials were also reused and recycled wherever possible. This included:
- separating demolition concrete and steel for recycling and reuse
- sending around 6,000 tonnes of asphalt for recycling and reuse
- using five kilometres of second-hand rail from elsewhere on KiwiRail’s network.
The project was recognised with the HEB Circular Economy (Reduce/Reuse/Recycle) of Construction Materials Award in 2023 and was a finalist in the WasteMINZ awards for contaminated land management.
Train servicing at Waltham
Waltham is also home to an automated train wash and servicing facility for carriages used on the Coastal Pacific and TranzAlpine scenic trains. Carriages come through the facility for servicing, maintenance and cleaning before returning to service.
The automated train wash uses smart technology to recognise different types of carriage and adjust the cleaning process to suit. Brushes and rollers clean the exterior before the carriages are dried, helping keep the trains clean and ready for passengers.
